Tips for tracing bitmaps

The following tips can help you achieve high-quality trace results.

Use high-quality source bitmaps.
If your image has low resolution, try upsampling it. Click the Adjustments tab in the PowerTRACE dialog box, and choose an upsampling mode. Based on the analysis of a large number of artistic images and photographs, the two artificial intelligence methods, Illustration and Photorealistic, use neural network algorithms to reduce noise and pixelation and maintain color. With its low-level blurring and sharpening techniques that create cartoon-like effects, the Illustration method is great for images such as logos, drawings, illustrations, and paintings created in graphic design software. The Photorealistic method works well for resizing photos. For more information about resampling images, see Bitmap dimensions and resolution. Depending on your system hardware configuration, upsampling an image with the Illustration and Photorealistic methods can take from a couple of seconds to several minutes. CorelDRAW displays a progress control to indicate the estimated time to complete the trace operation. The estimated time does not take into account any processes or applications which you may initiate after you start tracing and which may affect performance.
If dithering or JPEG compression was used in the source bitmap, the bitmap may contain additional noise. To remove artifacts and noise from a bitmap, click the Adjustments tab in the PowerTRACE dialog box, and enable the Remove JPEG artifacts check box.
For best results when you use the Centerline Trace method, convert the bitmap to the black-and-white color mode before tracing. Note that in this case you cannot adjust detail.
When tracing technical illustrations and sketches with faint lines, you can improve the results by applying the Find edges special effect to the source bitmap. To do this, click Effects Contour Find Edges.
For outline tracing, reduce the color depth of the bitmap by changing the color mode, and then adjust the color and contrast.
You can adjust the traced results at any time, including during a trace, by changing the PowerTRACE settings.
You can shape a bitmap before tracing it. Click the Shape tool in the toolbox, click the bitmap, drag any of the nodes until the bitmap is the shape you want, and then trace the bitmap.
If important detail has been removed from the traced results, try choosing None from the Remove list box on the Settings page of PowerTRACE. You can also try choosing Color from entire image from the Remove list box, enabling the Specify option, and sampling the color you want to specify as a background color.
If background color is removed around the edges but remains within image areas, from the Remove list box choose Color from entire image.
If too many colors or details are lost, move the Detail slider on the Settings page.
To preserve detail in bitmaps that have fine details, thin lines, and no anti-aliasing applied, choose Line art from the Image type list box on the Settings page.
Try applying the AI-powered Art Style effects to a bitmap (Effects Creative Art Style) before vectorizing it with PowerTrace. For more information about these effects, see Art Style.
