Setting up the Leap Motion controller

Before you being painting, you need to make sure that the Leap Motion controller has an unobstructed view of your air gestures. It’s also important to get familiar with how Leap Motion and Corel Painter Freestyle capture air gestures.

There is a cone-shaped area situated above the Leap Motion controller that is called the field of view that allows the Leap Motion controller to detect and capture air gestures. Within the field of view, there is an additional box-shaped area called the painting space. The painting space corresponds to the Corel Painter Freestyle page and the air gestures that you make within the painting space are then translated into brushstrokes on the page. If the controller is not setup properly, it will have difficulty seeing and successfully capturing the air gestures in Corel Painter Freestyle.

Tips for working with Leap Motion

To ensure Leap Motion’s ability to successfully capture all air gestures, follow these tips:

If you’re using a laptop, the same eight inch distance applies. Therefore, you may need to elevate the laptop so that the Leap Motion controller is positioned eight inches below it. You may also want to choose a smaller-sized painting space to better match the laptop screen size. For more information, see To quickly resize the painting space.
