Create and position a stone
To see the hollow effect created by the Boolean operations you performed earlier, you must remove a piece from the sphere so that you can see inside it. To do this, you will create a stone object and position it to cover the top of the sphere. By assigning the Negative Boolean attribute to the stone object, the stone will not appear in the scene. Instead, the space occupied by the stone will be removed from the spheres, letting you "see" inside the sphere.
- From the Advanced Display palette, click the Display Mode tool to return to Wireframe Display mode.
- From the Create palette, click the Stone tool.
- Click the A button
next to the stone's bounding box.
- From the General tab of the Object Attributes dialog, enable the Negative Boolean attribute.
- Click the OK icon.
- With the Stone selected, click the triangle icon next to the Edit text button. The Material Presets Library appears.
- From the list of categories, click the Rocks & Stones category, then click the Marble, Black on White material thumbnail and click the OK icon.
- From the Edit palette, use the X, Y, and Z controls on the Resize tool to make the stone large enough to completely cover the top half of the sphere.
- From the Edit palette, use the X, Y, and Z controls on the Reposition tool to move the stone into position. Click here to see an example of the Reposition tool in use.
- Select the sphere group. From the General tab of the Object Attributes dialog, enable the Positive Boolean attribute, and click the OK icon.
- With the spheres still selected, hold down Shift, and click the stone to select the stone and sphere objects simultaneously.
- Click the G button
next to the group's bounding box to group the selected objects.
- Click the Render button to render the scene.
